The Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton says she regrets the decision by Galway East TD Colm Keaveney to vote against the Social Welfare Bill.

Party Chairman Colm Keaveney has been expelled from the parliamentary party after he voted against the measure yesterday.

He said he took the decision because he could not support cuts affecting women and children in the social welfare bill.

His chairmanship of the party is now in doubt – and Junior Labour Minister, Kathleen Lynch says the matter will be decided by the Labour Party conference.

She says she’s confident that Deputy Keaveney will have the respect of a number of TDs this morning.
