The plug has been pulled on a new swimming pool and leisure complex for the Knocknacarra area, sank by the economic slowdown and a slump in consumer spending.

Officials of the City Council have confirmed that the private consortium involved in the estimated €7m project in Cappagh Park are now ‘not proceeding’ with the development.

Councillors will officially be told of the ‘pull out’ at their meeting on Monday night — the project had been ‘ready to go’ for the past 18 months subject to the necessary financial commitment from the backers.

The consortium — made up of the J&L Group, S&P Architects and NRG Fitness — were to construct a 25 metre pool, children’s pool, steam and sauna room, crèche, cafe and health suite on the 1.8 acre Cappagh Park site.

Under the public private partnership, 47 public hours were to be made available in the completed facility — the project had been warmly welcomed by local public representatives and community leaders.
