Knocknacarra Football Club plans new Cappagh sports campus
From this week’s Galway City Tribune – Knocknacarra Football Club has announced plans for a new sports campus on Cappagh Road, to complement existing and planned new facilities at Cappagh Park.
The soccer club, with over 1,000 members, confirmed it has entered into an agreement to purchase 10.6 acres of land on Cappagh Road, subject to planning permission being granted.
The site at the end of Western Distributor Road is adjacent to the existing Galway City Council-owned facility, which is leased by Knocknacarra FC and other clubs.
The local authority plans to build a water polo swimming pool at Cappagh Park, and Knocknacarra FC said its vision for extra playing facilities at its site nearby would be complementary.
“Our vision is not just for Knocknacarra Football Club, it’s for Knocknacarra. My ideal scenario is to create a sports campus that would be good for the whole community,” enthused John Reilly, Chairman of Knocknacarra FC.
Details will be drawn up by planning consultants engaged by the club. Plans include playing pitches, and possibly also walking and running trails, a playground and outdoor exercise for older people.
