KLM COMMEMORATION CEREMONY TO BE HELD IN CITY TODAY

The 50th anniversary of the KLM Air crash will be commemorated in the city this afternoon. [4pm]

99 passengers and crew lost their lives in the crash 100 miles off the Connemara coast on August 14th 1958.

Their bodies were take ashore by Galway Red Cross, the Order of Malta, along with fire crews, Gardaí, the Civil Defence Corps, fisherman and many more people.

All business in Galway closed down as the funeral cortege passed through the city towards Bohermore cemetery.

A ceremony, hosted by the City Council, will take place at 4pm today at the New Cemetery in Bohermore to honour those killed and those who helped bring their remains ashore.
