Kirwan Roundabout replacement project is near end of design stage

Galway City Tribune – The detailed design to replace the Kirwan Roundabout with a signalised junction is currently being completed before the project is submitted to An Bord Pleanála for approval.

The planning appeals board will decide whether to approve the Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPO) on land needed to build the junction.

A spokesperson for Galway City Council explained that objections can be made at this point but valid objections are generally on planning or legal grounds only.

After receiving the application, the planning appeals board can decide to hold a ‘Public Local Enquiry’ – better known as an oral hearing – at which affected parties can formally put their views forward.  If no objections are made, An Bord Pleanála can confirm, amend or reject the CPO without the inquiry.

“In this case, there are very few properties affected because the majority of the new junction is on existing public lands, mainly the existing roundabout. However, there is still a possibility of an oral hearing – just about the CPO not the development. The time scale for this is at the discretion of the Board.”

She said the project is expected to commence on site in 2019.

The next roundabouts to be signalised are the Browne at the back of University Hospital Galway on the Seamus Quirke Road and the Skerritt at GMIT.
