Killileas’ disbelief over Golfgate
The family of the political powerhouse in whose honour the infamous Oireachtas Golf dinner was held has this week has expressed disbelief at the entire debacle – having turned up at the function just minutes before it was due to start.
The event was held to remember the late TD and MEP Mark Killilea, with members of his family were in attendance.
This week his son, Cllr Donagh Killilea, told The Connacht Tribune that he and his family had turned up minutes before the meal and left minutes afterwards.
That was in part because Mark Killilea’s widow Ann Killilea has recovered from cancer and she did not want to be part of any gathering which is why they turned up at the very last minute.
The Killilea family were holidaying in Ballyconneely as they do every year at around this time and accepted an invitation to attend the function in The Station House Hotel.
They did not play in the golf tournament and had received three assurances that everything would be okay at the hotel. The family had made three inquiries that every precaution was adhered to and were satisfied that this was the case.
“My mother has recovered from cancer so obviously we were concerned about her and that is why we made three inquiries to the hotel and we were assured that it was safe to attend,” said Cllr Killilea.
