Killererin 1-5

Mountbellew/Moylough strolled to a facile 4-17 to 1-5 victory over a weary, disjointed Killererin in Tuam Stadium on Sunday evening.

Unable to cope with the victors attacking prowess, Killererin were a beaten team from a long way out, with Barry McHugh’s 32nd minute goal really and truly putting the final nail in the coffin as Killererin fell way off the pace.

The timing of the Mountbellew/Moylough goals were impeccable: two early on before Killererin had a chance to settle in to any kind of rhythm; and another just as they looked to engineer something of a fightback.

The pace and precision of Mountbellew/Moylough was a joy to behold throughout, as they carved through the would-be Killererin challenges as they pleased, picking off scores at will and creating numerous goal scoring opportunities.

Indeed, this Mountbellew side look hell-bent on really having a go at Corofin this year and based on this performance, the raw materials are certainly there, but the strength of the opposition, or lack there-of, will not be lost on the Mountbellew/Moylough management and supporters when reflecting back on this game.

After an encouraging opening round display against Caherlistrane, Killererin would have hoped to provide a much stiffer test of Mountbellew/Moylough, but Jimmy Murphy’s side never looked like raising a gallop against their far superior opponents.

The understanding and interplay between the Mountbellew/Moylough front eight caused the Killererin defence no end of problems throughout the day and in the end it got to the stage where they simply didn’t know where the next wave of attack was coming from.

It had all started off so positively for Killererin when Shane Fahy pointed inside the opening 30 seconds but Mountbellew/ Moylough immediately set about going for the jugular and after Eoin Finnerty levelled the tie, last year’s Galway U-21 star gathered a drilled pass from Barry McHugh before teeing up the onrushing Michael Daly who slotted home to the bottom corner.

It was a brilliantly worked goal and a sign of things to come from three of Mountbellew’s key performers.

Fahy responded well for Killererin to the early set back registering his second point but a second goal by Mountbellew/Moylough, finished by Finnerty but made by the Barrett’s, Andy and Matthew, and Colm Mannion, rocked
