The inquiry into the death of an experienced diver at Killary Harbour last year, concluded that he had died from blood loss due to a duodenal ulcer.

Coroner for West Galway, Dr Ciaran MacLoughlin, however, endorsed the recommendations made by an expert witness that all equipment be serviced and checked by suitably qualified technicians.

Gerry Deane (52), of Knights Park, Castlebar, was diving off Rossroe Pier, which is on the Galway side of the channel, with fellow members of Gráinne Úaile Sub Aqua Club, when he became unwell and surfaced. Strenuous efforts were made to revive him, but the Coroner advised his family that he could only have been resuscitated by means of blood transfusions and surgery.

The inquiry was held at Galway Courthouse today (Friday).
