Killannin’s last eight hopes are out of their own hands
Killannin 1-16
Tuam Stars 3-7
AFTER three draws from their opening three fixtures, Killannin finally got their first win of this year’s senior championship as they overcame Tuam Stars at Pearse Stadium on Sunday. With all their games now played in Group 2, Killannin must rely on Tuam to get a result against Salthill-Knocknacarra in the final round to secure the Connemare club’s passage to the quarter finals.
It would be a major disappointment for Killannin were they not to do so as the west Galway side have look very impressive when they hit top form. While they only had three points to spare over Tuam at the end of last weekend’s game, in reality the gap should have been much larger had it not been for Tuam keeping themselves in the contest with goals.
Killannin set out their stall early on as they raced into a 0-6 to 0-1 lead inside the opening 15 minutes. Johnny Heaney has been their star player all year and he again was the man to get them going in the early stages. He kicked two delightful points inside the opening six minutes while also setting up Patrick Sweeney to find the target as Killannin kicked the first three scores of the game.
Ben O’Connell finally got Tuam off the mark in the 9th minute after good work from Joseph Lowry, but Killannin were cutting through the north Galway side’s defence almost untouched in the opening quarter hour.
Niall Walsh tapped over two scores in quick succession to leave Killannin 0-5 to 0-1 ahead. David Melia’s side then turned over the resulting kickout before Patrick Sweeney extended their lead further with a good score.
