Kilkenny boss Cody not a happy camper after championship loss to Galway
By Alan Dooley
THE lead up to last Sunday’s fixture was largely dominated by the intriguing prospect of Kilkenny’s most decorated hurler preparing a Galway side to take on his native county and the man who guided his own playing career to such glorious triumphs.
After a compelling contest which ultimately boiled down to a test of Conor Cooney’s composure from a placed ball which the St. Thomas’ captain passed with flying colours, it was hard not to pay close attention to the post-match interaction between Henry Shefflin and Brian Cody.
Cody was already visibly incensed by the decision to award the match winning free by referee Colm Lyons seconds after his side had appeared to have pulled off another Houdini act when John Donnelly’s shot got the better of Galway goalkeeper Éanna Murphy.
“Well I think as usual when reporters start asking me about referees and referee’s decisions, they are merely suggesting the fact that I should have seen something strange about it,” Cody stated long after the final whistle. When pushed further for his thoughts on the incident, the Kilkenny manager exhaled deeply and continued: “From where I was, I’d say it was a very, very hard free, yeah.”
Shefflin went looking for his former mentor as the supporter’s pitch invasion got underway, but for a moment Cody only had eyes for the officials to perhaps try and get his point of view across. Eventually Cody stopped as Shefflin approached, turned and the pair shook hands in what looked to be a tense exchange without words being spoken, a viewpoint Cody batted away afterwards.
