An Bord Pleanala has overturned an earlier decision to allow a temporary school building be built in the village of Kilcolgan.

Thomas and Nancy Neilan had proposed to construct the 6 classroom building, staff room and office at lands near the centre of Kilcolgan.

Galway County Council had approved the plans to build the six classroom school several months ago with some conditions attached.

However, an appeal was lodged outlining concerns over the impact the development could have on road safety for pedestrian and vehicular users.

An Bord Pleanala has now refused planning permission for the development for two main reasons.

It states that the building would seriously injure the visual amenities of the area and therefore be contrary to sustainable development of the area.

It was also not satisfied that the proposed development would not constitute an unacceptable risk of pollution to groundwater.
