Kenna To Start Against Bray

WHEN former Republic of Ireland international Jeff Kenna took over as rookie manager of Galway United back at the end of April, he claimed that he would only consider playing with the club as a last resort.

Well, after a full round of games under his stewardship, United are still rooted to the bottom of the table and that crisis point may yet be reached for the trip to the Carlisle Grounds for a showdown with Bray Wanderers this evening (7.45 p.m.).

Kenna became player-manager for the first time in the friendly against Leeds United on Wednesday night and may consider a start in Bray after playing for 45 minutes at right back against the English First Division side at Terryland.

He had played 26 games for Kidderminster Harriers in the Conference prior to crossing the Irish Sea and may see tonight’s game as the first in which he can make an impact on the field of play, especially in the wake of the departures of so many key players due to the financial troubles at the club.

“My conditioning is good and I’ve played competitively at Conference level up until a couple of months ago,” said Kenna this week. “With our current lack of strength in depth it now makes sense to make myself available to play.”
