Music lovers in Galway and the West can look forward to a rare musical treat on Thursday next, April 28 when Welsh composer and musician Karl Jenkins conducts his own work, The Armed Man – a Mass for Peace in Leisureland at 8pm as part of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra’s 2011 Signature Series. He will be joined by one of the country’s foremost choirs, the Galway Baroque Singers, for the event.

The Galway Baroque Singers were invited by RTÉ in November to sing The Armed Man with the Concert Orchestra and guest conductor Karl Jenkins, an invitation that they were happy to accept.

The singers regard it as a singular honour to perform under this world famous composer and musician, the choir having already performed another of his works, The Armed Man in 2009 and the Irish premiere of his Stabat Mater in 2008 to mark the silver jubilee of the Galway Baroques.

Karl Jenkins composed The Armed Man a decade ago and it immediately became a sensation with gold CD sales and nearly 1,00 performances since.

Now, for the first time in Ireland, the composer takes the podium to conduct one of the best loved pieces of our age. The Armed Man brings the audience on a moving journey from the cacophony of war to a final message of hope and peace.

This full evening of Karl Jenkins’ music also features his Te Deum and Palladio.

Tickets for the event, priced at €20, are on sale at Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop, Middle St., Telephone, 091 561766. As this promises to be a very popular concert, early booking is advisable.
