The Justice Minister is expected to respond to concerns over garda vetting practices affecting Galway students, in the Seanad this evening.

Galway East Labour Senator Lorraine Higgins has called for Alan Shatter to clarify the issue, after she received reports of delays in getting garda clearance which is affecting the take up of jobs and work placements.

63 students of Athenry Vocational School were expected to start work experience weeks ago, but are unable to do so because of delays in such garda vetting reports.

The students are undertaking childcare, healthcare, nursing and social studies PLC courses.

Senator Higgins says she wants to get to the bottom of this problem so that students can avail of their work experience.
