Jury finds city man guilty of drug dealing
Galway Bay fm newsroom – A 38-year-old drug dealer has been found guilty by a jury of having almost €10,000 worth of cannabis hidden under a wall in Merlin woods.
Hubert Guinan, with a rental address at 1 Ros na Shee, Castlelawn Heights, had denied having cannabis in his possession and having the drug for sale or supply at Merlin Woods on February 23rd last year, during a two-day trial at Galway Circuit Criminal Court.
Hubert Guinan had also denied impeding or obstructing Garda PJ Noone by running from him, discarding items as he ran and behaving in an aggressive manner when approached by Garda Noone on the same date.
Garda Noone told the jury that he and Garda Noel McNulty were searching the woods situated at the rear of Merlin Park Hospital at 4pm on February 23rd last year.
Garda McNulty found a plastic shopping bag containing cannabis concealed at the bottom of a stone wall, covered by twigs and leaves and hidden by dense undergrowth.
The shopping bag contained almost 10 thousand euro worth of cannabis.
Both Gardai hid nearby and waited.
Two hours later they saw Guinan jog through the woods towards them on a pathway.
As Guinan located and picked up the bag both Gardai jumped out and identified themselves as Gardai.
Garda Noone said he ran and caught up with Guinan, whom he said, violently resisted arrest.
The jury returned a unanimous verdict finding Guinan guilty of all three charges.
Judge Rory McCabe remanded Guinan in custody to July 11th for sentence.
