Junior Doctors strike outside UHG

Galway bay fm newsroom -Up to 30 junior doctors, some dressed in hospital scrubs, are protesting outside University Hospital Galway against long working hours.

Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors claim the HSE is disregarding guidelines set out in the E.U Working Time Directive in relation to the the limit on working hours.

More than 3 thousand doctors are striking at 51 hospitals across the country.

Those staging strike action have agreed to provide weekend cover for in-patients and emergency care.

Almost all appointments at UHG and Merlin Park Hospital have been cancelled today, and patients are urged not to turn up, unless asked to do so by the HSE.

At Portiuncula Hospital Ballinasloe, all appointments are scheduled to go-ahead today, unless otherwise notified by the HSE.
