Loughrea shooting

A sensation was created in the town and district on Saturday last by a strange shooting which took place early that morning at Cosmona Cottage, and as a result of which a woman named Mary Cusack lost her life.

In the early hours, according to the evidence given at the inquest on Monday, a number of shots were fired into the room in which deceased and her husband were sleeping, three bullets entering the body of the unfortunate woman.

Abusive pauper

Mr. Athy, Master Galway Workhouse, charged Margaret Leonard with abusing the Matron of the Workhouse on the 19th inst., while she was an inmate in the institution.

This woman, complainant stated, is continually coming and going to the institution.

Mr Kilbride: And I am sure you know what bad language is over there (laughter).

Complainant: It was the worst ever heard.

Hugh Donoghue, Assistant Master, stated that the expressions used were disgraceful.

Defendant was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment, and was ordered to find security to be of good behaviour on her release.

Coal order

At the weekly meeting of the Galway Board of Guardians, Mr. Faller said they should advertise for more than 100 or 50 tons of coal in consequence of the strike.

The Chairman said the suggestion was a good one. Mr. McDonagh said the price of coal was 6d a ton higher than last year. The Clerk said they had advertised for 300 tons.

Sheep dipping fines

Heavy fines were imposed by Mr. W.P. Cahill, D.J. at Lawrencetown Court in cases where farmers in the district failed to make returns to the County Council offices that their sheep were dipped. In one case, a defendant was fined 60s, with 40s. costs.

Smart detective work

Smart work on the part of Detective Officer Maguire, Gort, led to the arrest and conviction of two young men from Mallow, County Cork, at Gort District Court, before Mr. Cahill. Both men pleaded guilty to the larceny of calves and sheep in the Crusheen district, and were each sent to prison for three months.

Detective Maguire came across a derelict car left on the side of the road late one night. There was no tax on this car, and taking the number of it, the Guards later traced the owner with some difficulty to Mallow.

The guards proceeded there, where the missing stock were found and identified by the owner in County Galway. The two men were arrested and detained, suspicion being at once aroused regarding them.

In reply to the Justice, the witness said the motor car made three trips from Mallow to Bellharbour, a distance of nearly 100 miles, in the night, returning at night with stolen animals.
