Judge postpones sentencing for Headford Road riot
Galway Bay fm newsroom – A man who caused a riot when he took part in a prearranged bare knuckle fist fight in a halting site on the outskirts of Galway city, has avoided a prison sentence by proving to a judge his fighting days are over.
Several video clips of the illegal fight, which took part at Carrowbrowne Halting Site, Headford Road, Galway on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 are posted on You Tube.
They show the accused 39 year old Patrick ‘Jaws’ Ward, engage in a six-minute fist fight with the other “contestant”, Barney McGinley.
Ward, who now lives at 56 Danesfort Drive, Loughrea with his wife and seven children, pleaded guilty in December, 2012, before Galway Circuit Criminal to committing an affray in that he and his co-accused, Barney McGinley, used or threatened to use unlawful violence towards each other at Carrowbrowne Halting Site, Headford Road, Galway on Tuesday, June 12, 2012.
The matter was adjourned for a year to see if Ward’s undertaking to the court that he would never box again, was made in good faith and a very positive probation report was handed into court this week.
Judge Rory McCabe decided to further adjourn sentence to March 2015.
