As the seals broke on over 3,000 brown envelopes across the county yesterday, there were scenes of exhilaration and relief amongst the class of 2018.

There was jubilation in Gort Community School as student, Olga Burke, received the holy grail of Leaving Cert results – achieving six H1s.

Principal of the school, Brian Crossan, said he was absolutely delighted for Olga, adding that results had been good right across the school.

“I’ve been in education for 27 years and to see someone achieve six H1s is great but Olga was involved with every aspect of school life – she was on the basketball team and involved in lots of extra-curricular activities.

“She had a fully balanced education – this girl is the full package,” said Mr Crossan.

“We are very happy with the spread of results. We are a community school and we cater to everybody’s needs so it’s wonderful to see even students who are not necessarily academic still achieving great results,” he added.

Some 174 students sat their exams at Presentation College Athenry and Principal Cathal Moore said staff were thrilled to see students reach their full potential.

“We had several students achieve the maximum 625 points – it was a very enjoyable morning,” said Mr Moore.

Principal at St Cuan’s College, Castleblakney, Collette Kennedy Walsh, said they were overjoyed with this year’s crop of students – 43 of them sitting exams and 11 achieving in excess of 500 points.

“They really are excellent results. Another 12 of them got over 450; there was no subject failed which is remarkable and of the 27 that took higher level maths, 23 got over a H3,” said Ms Kennedy Walsh.

In Garbally College, Ballinasloe, Principal Stephen Reilly said students were repaid for all the hard work put in – with student Abuzar Jawad achieving 613 points.

“The effort, hard work and commitment of the students, their parents and teachers is evident in the great results we have here this morning,” said Mr Reilly.
