AFTER watching his side overpower Leitrim as expected at Pearse Stadium last Sunday, Galway manager Padraic Joyce understood that little in the way of meaningful learnings could be taken from a semi-final that became little more than a training exercise once the goals began to fly home in the second half.

“Semi-finals are about winning and getting to the final and we done that today,” Joyce remarked afterwards. “Aspects of the game that we will have to improve on, but overall, 4-20 was a great scoreline to kick and we kept going to the bitter end which is great, and we didn’t take the foot off the gas.

“We got our fourth goal in the last minute of injury time. Overall, very, very pleased. We always say the next play is the most important play. They kept driving on and driving on. We still have nothing won so we will face a huge battle back here in three weeks’ time.”

Galway have so far been faring relatively well with regards to limiting the number of injuries picked up by key players. Joyce confirmed that Conor Flaherty and Dylan Canney were well on the road to recovery with only James McLoughlin ruled out long term due to a quad injury that will require an operation. Team selection meetings are proving lengthy affairs while Joyce was also delighted with Cillian McDaid’s impact.
