Joni Mitchell songs get new treatment from Edel

Dublin based singer Edel Meade brings The Joni Project to Monroe’s Live on Friday, June 6, and to Campbell’s Tavern, Cloughanover, on Saturday, June 7.

The Joni Project is collaboration with guitarist Dick Farrelly which sees the pair take on and reinterpret some gems from the Joni Mitchell back catalogue.

The project started last December, when Edel and Dick met up for a jamming session.

“I had been posting videos on Facebook the week beforehand of me playing songs by people like Carole King,” Edel says. “He was clicking ‘Like’ and the day before we were supposed to jam I said to him ‘do you like Joni Mitchell?’. And he said he could play the whole songbook, he loved her music.

“He called over to my house and we played Joni songs for about five hours. It just felt really good and I said we should arrange a performance. We decided February would be a good time to do something and we organised a show in the Odessa in Dublin. That went really well, it was sold out, we got fantastic reviews. That was it – it’s been all go ever since.”

Edel has a degree in jazz performance, so people shouldn’t come expecting a regular ‘covers’ gig in a show show that will explore all the eras and sounds of Joni Mitchell’s career. However punters can also expect to hear hit songs like Big Yellow Taxi.
