Join the quest to find Galway’s Greatest Living Sporting Legend

THE quest to find Galway’s Greatest Living Sporting Legend begins this week to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Galway Sports Stars awards.

Established in 1965, the awards scheme has honoured some of Galway’s greatest sporting achievements over the past 50 years with countless heroes in various disciplines feted during that time.

But the upcoming 50th anniversary awards banquet in the Ardilaun Hotel on Saturday, January 17 will be a milestone occasion in the history of the awards as Galway’s Greatest Living Sporting Legend will be honoured.

And readers of the Connacht Tribune will have an opportunity to participate in the selection process over the next few weeks by nominating their choice for this supreme accolade. And the prize for the winning entry will be a weekend away in the Castletroy Hotel in Limerick, owned by Pat and Una McDonagh of Supermac’s, the sponsors of the Sports Stars awards.

Naturally, there will be no shortage of candidates and during the month of November in the Connacht and City Tribune newspapers, we will put the spotlight on those Galway sporting heroes whose deeds have stood the passage of time.

Understandably, it will be difficult to equate domestic achievement, notably on the GAA fields, with that of international success, but that is the challenge involved in choosing Galway’s Greatest Living Sporting Legend.

Many individuals down through the decades have left a lasting impression from their feats in the sporting areana and readers are invited to submit their nominations and, perhaps, expand on the reasons why.

Ultimately, the final decision will rest with the panel of journalists from the Connacht Tribune, Tuam Herald and Raidio na Gaeltachta who select the Sports Stars annually, but the first reader drawn whose choice tallies with the official verdict will win the weekend away in the Castletroy Hotel.

It’s going to be a real head-scratcher as Galway is a vibrant sporting county which had produced a multitude of legends, several of whom were feted as recently as last month on football finals day at Tuam Stadium.
