Johnny Óg’s Town Hall tribute to his late father

An Cosán Draíochta, a new musical suite in memory of the renowned and much-loved Conamara melodeon player, Johnny Connolly, will be performed at the city’s Town Hall Theatre next Tuesday, November 8, as part of a nationwide tour.

The music for An Cosán Draíochta,was written by his son, Johnny Óg Connolly, himself a unique and highly regarded force in traditional music, both as a performer and composer.

Johnny Connolly, who died in December 2019, was referred to as the ‘King of the Melodeon’, regarded by fellow musicians as a genius and revered for his rhythmic, flawless playing.

His love of his native Conamara, its culture and its music coloured every tune he played, and that deep-rooted connection is reflected and honoured in Johnny Óg’s beautiful composition.

An Cosán Draíochta is performed by an ensemble of acclaimed artists who weave music, song and poetry in this moving and uplifting musical tribute.

They include Johnny Óg (accordion and melodeon) Ciara Ní Bhriain (fiddle/viola), Clíodhna Ní Choisdealbha (banjo, tenor guitar and Greek bouzouki), Jim Higgins (piano and percussion), Pádraig Ó Dubhghaill (guitar), Seosamh Ó Neachtain (dancer) and Áine Ní Dhroighneáin (singer and actor).
