Jobs saved as Supermac buys Lough Rea Hotel
Around 70 jobs have been saved at the Lough Rea Hotel and Spa, after it was bought by Supermac’s Pat McDonagh for a figure believed to be in the region of €2 million.
He is also investing in a complete refurbishment of the four-year-old hotel.
The 91-bed hotel – built at a cost of around €20m – was placed in receivership in October 2012, with creditors owed around €2m.
Mr McDonagh told the Connacht Tribune said the property plays a “pivotal role” for employment and income generation in Loughrea.
“We are delighted to be safeguarding jobs locally, which may otherwise have been lost. We are also most pleased that people who have events booked in the hotel can look forward to them in confidence and can be assured of receiving the finest quality hospitality and service.
“The hotel will receive significant investment for its refurbishment and upgrading which will enhance many of its current facilities,” said Mr McDonagh.
