Jiving for beginners this November

Tom Jive will resume his Beginner Arrive and Jive courses in venues across Galway City and County this November.

The classes, run over four weeks, offer people a great opportunity to improve their dancing skills ahead of taking to the floor at the next social event or wedding they attend.

Country stars such as Nathan Carter, Derek Ryan, Mike Denver and more are riding high on RTÉ, while jiving has taken Ireland by storm. Tom’s classes offer people an opportunity to learn from the beginning.

“The four-week jive-only format I teach has been very successful for many reasons,” Tom he says. “The progressive nature of the class means an absolute beginner on week one can turn into a very competent dancer by week four.

“Another reason people enjoy my course is I teach the ladies’ steps and also show the men exactly how to turn their partners,” he continues, adding that “dancers with some experience come to improve their timing and learn the nice moves”.

Tom describes himself as “very lucky” in that his classes seem to attract equal numbers of men and women.

And he advises people who are interested in learning to Irish jive properly, to “make sure you jump on this bus, as it may not stop in your area for a while again”.

And the good news is that no partner is required for Tom’s classes.

“Bring the fella or bring a friend or come on your own. Don’t worry, my class has a very friendly, relaxed atmosphere,” he says.  “We start at the very beginning so no experience is required either.”

Those who want to know more, can check his website, he adds.

“You can watch the video of my classes on week four, with dancers – most of whom have never danced before – showing off great jive moves.”

Tom Jive’s November courses will start in Galway City’s Ardilaun Hotel on Tuesday, November 6. On Wednesday, November 7, they are in the Lady Gregory in Gort and on Monday, November 12, they’ll begin in Portumna’s Town Hall.
