Jes survive early scare

REIGNING champions Coláiste Iognáid survived an early scare in their Connacht Tribune Senior Cup quarter final at Newcastle on Friday to run out comfortable winners and secure a place in the last four.

Playing with the wind, the Oranmore side took the game to the holders and dominated possession and territory for the first 10 minutes. This was eventually rewarded with a penalty which was converted by Jonathan Daly.

However, Jes responded immediately and their first real incursion into the opposition’s 22 yielded a penalty scored by winger Anthony O’Loughlin. The Jes back-row began to dominate the breakdown and play quickly returned to the Calasanctius line where O’Loughlin’s touchdown was disallowed for a forward pass.

From the scrum Jes secured a turnover and moved the ball quickly to Damien McDonough who touched down in the opposite corner.

The Oranmore side increased the pressure on Jes but…
