Jazz guitarist Louis Stewart for Campbell’s Tavern show
Renowned Irish jazz guitarist Louis Stewart will play Campbell’s Tavern, Cloughanover, Headford, this Sunday, July 21. He will be joined for the show by Miles Drennan on piano, Neil O’Loghlen on bass and Shane O’Donovan on drums.
Louis Stewart, who has been honoured with an honorary doctorate by Trinity College for his contribution to music, began his international career in 1968 when he was awarded the special jury prize at The Montreux International Jazz Festival.
Shortly afterwards, he began working with the legendary Benny Goodman, an association that lasted three years.
In the 70s Louis began a lengthy association with George Shearing with whom he toured America, Brazil and all of Europe, and recorded eight albums – several in trio with Danish bass master Niels-Henning Orsted-Pedersen, and in a quintet with vibra- phonist Steve Nelson and drummer Dennis Mackrel.
He began working with Canadian orchestrator and arranger, Robert Farnon in 1976 and this partnership produced more than 10 albums.
In 1994, as a member of the Shearing trio, Louis featured for a week opposite Tommy Flanagan’s trio in The Blue Note, New York. This led to an association – still active – with Peter Washington and Lewis Nash which has included a week-long engagement, as leader, at the legendary Village Vanguard, NYC.
Still based in Dublin, Louis performs regularly in Germany and Norway. His James Joyce/Ulysses inspired concert piece Joyce Notes has been produced to acclaim in Norway’s national theatre.
Tickets for his Campbell’s show are €10 and doors are at 8pm. For bookings please phone 09335454.
