TEKE::TEKE...making their Galway debut this weekend.

In one of the outstanding dates on this year’s gig calendar, Montreal-based seven-piece Japanese psych-rock act TEKE::TEKE are set to make their Galway debut this weekend. What began as a one-off tribute act to legendary Japanese guitarist Takeshi ‘Terry’ Terauchi has slowly evolved into one of the most blended, mutated, and extraordinarily cohesive bands to emerge in a number of years.

Their first album, Shirushi, was released last year and covered by the likes of Mojo and the New Yorker.

With their music said to draw on styles from Japan, Brazil and Bulgaria, TEKE::TEKE play the Mick Lally Theatre this Sunday, September 11.

The name itself originates in the chugging guitar sound that filters through a lot of Japanese surf-rock, but the band’s sound is much harder to define. That is certainly, in part, down to the size of the outfit and the even spread of influence that exists among them.

“It was definitely because we’re a seven-piece and everybody brings in such a wide array of influences,” confirms guitarist and band founder Serge Nakauchi Pelletier.

“Even more so now with the next record – we just finished recording it two days ago. For Shirushi, it was released in 2021 but it was recorded in the summer of 2019. So for us, it’s been around [for a while].
