It’s three wins on the trot as Utd keep Treaty men at bay

THE team that takes its chances usually prevails, and that was the case in Limerick on Friday night as Galway United converted one of just two chances either side had on target to make it three wins from three since the return from the mid-season break.
In a tough and physical encounter, there were just two efforts on target across the entire 90 minutes. United were responsible for both, but while Ruairi Keating’s 50th minute header from the edge of the box was never going to trouble the home side’s goalkeeper, it was a very different case two minutes earlier when Padraic Cunningham bagged what proved to be the only goal of the game.
It was a game that didn’t deserve much more in terms of goals, it being a contest high on effort and intensity but low on skill and beauty, but not every game can be the wonderful free-flowing encounters that were on show in the Euros on Monday, when two games produced 14 goals and a penalty shootout. Sometimes, it is all about digging deep, and that is what United did on Friday.
John Caulfield made one change to the side that dominated in the win over Cabinteely the previous week, and it was a big call to make, as Stephen Wash returned to the side after a three-match ban, with teenager Alex Murphy dropping to the bench.
Murphy was one of nine substitutes named on the bench by United, in sharp contrast to the home side, who only named a match-day squad of 16 players due to a string of injuries on what was an historic night for the home club, as it was the first-time ever they got to play in front of their home fans.
