STATEMENT made. Corofin fired out a warning shot to all potential challengers that they haven’t gone away as they secured the Division One league title in emphatic fashion at Tuam Stadium on Friday evening.

After being dethroned in last year’s county final by Mountbellew/Moylough, Corofin secured their first piece of silverware under new team manager Kevin Johnson.

Annaghdown’s bid for a first Division One league title since 1983 fell miles short as they kicked a measly four points. The most concerning aspect of this defeat was their inability to create chances.

Last year’s county quarter finalists couldn’t point to a high wide tally as they kicked just three during the course of the game. Although Annaghdown’s year is far from over with the championship fast approaching, the manner of the defeat will be a concern with their confidence sure to have taken a blow after this one-sided contest.

With Frankie Burke receiving two yellow cards in a six minute spell at the start of the second half, any hopes Annaghdown had of overturning their 10-point half time deficit ended with the loss of the sharpshooter.

Burke appeared to be fouled by his marker Dylan Wall in the 37th minute but a subsequent high challenge on Conor Cunningham left referee Ronan McNulty with little choice but to brandish a second yellow card.

Despite a decent ten minute spell at the start of the second half for Annaghdown in which they kicked the opening two points, they simply never looked like rectifying a disastrous opening period as Corofin simply controlled possession with the numerical advantage.
