It’s a February start for both ladies football and camogie
THE Galway camogie and ladies football senior football teams are facing a February start to their respective National League campaigns.
All-Ireland camogie champions Galway will have Tipperary – the team they beat in last year’s championship semi-final – Down, Offaly and Dublin for company in Group One.
The Tribeswomen will commence their campaign with a home tie against Offaly on Saturday, February 5. That game will be followed by away outings to Dublin (February 19) and Down (February 26) before rounding off their group action at home to Tipperary on March 19.
Galway reached the league final in 2021 but lost out to Kilkenny on a 1-18 to 1-15 scoreline at Croke Park last June. The county has claimed five league titles in total – 1994, 2002, 2005, 2015 and 2019.
The ladies footballers will be keen to step up on last year’s disappointing fortunes in both the league and championship under then first-season team manager Gerry Fahy.
Galway had their knock-out hopes ended in the 2021 league when falling to a heavy defeat against Donegal (4-21 to 2-11) at Tuam Stadium. The teams will be renewing rivalry in the opening round of this year’s competition on Sunday, February 13.
