Iarnród Éireann is to carry out an investigation into the cause of a fire which resulted in the evacuation of the train from Galway to Dublin this morning.

Smoke was spotted coming from beneath one of the carriages as the train was leaving Tullamore train station shortly before half past nine.

It’s understood there was an external fire in the engine department of the train and officials say there was no threat to passengers.

The fire was extinguished by the train driver but then a fault occurred with the braking system and the train could not be moved.

Rail crews carried out diagnostic tests and a maintenance crew managed to get the train into the platform at Tullamore after about an hour and a half.

Passengers on board were transferred onto another train coming from Westport, which brought them to Dublin.
