Galway Bay fm newsroom – Train passengers travelling between Galway and Dublin and Galway and Limerick experienced long delays again yesterday, as another incident affected the route.

A fire at Athenry railway station meant trains approaching the station in both directions were stalled for almost two hours.

The fire at the station broke out just after half five yesterday evening and it involved the roof of a shelter at the platform.

Two units of the fire brigade attended and put out the fire within 9 minutes, however the crew were on site for about two hours to ensure the area was made safe.

Trains travelling between Galway and Dublin and Galway and Limerick were delayed as a result.

It follows delays of several hours the previous day after a lorry hit Lough Atalia bridge and problems at Heuston Station in Dublin.

While, Irish Rail tweeted some information during yesterday’s stoppage, many passengers complained about a lack of information, which was compounded by humid weather.

Spokesperson for Iarnród Éireann, Barry Kenny told Galway Bay fm News that a series of events, including signalling faults, caused yesterday’s delays.
