International stars and local talent in mix for Latin Quarter Festival

Date Published: 27-Apr-2011

Galway, already dubbed ‘City of the Festivals’, will add another exciting event to its hectic calendar when it hosts the three-day Coors Light Live at the Latin Quarter across 19 venues in the city this bank holiday weekend.

The musical extravaganza promises to showcase a mouth-watering line up of both international stars and promising local talent in the famous carnival atmosphere that has become synonymous with Galway’s summer months.

Dublin-born songwriter Cathy Davey is the headline act on the opening day of the festival and will inevitably be one of the main attractions over the course of the three days. The multi-platinum-selling artist has emerged as one of the country’s best musical performers since she shot to prominence as a result of the success of her second album, Tales of Silversleeve, in 2007.

That record was named as the ninth best album of the decade in a list compiled by The Irish Times and earned Davey a Choice Prize nomination for Irish Album of the Year Award the year before she picked up a prize for Best Irish Female at the 2008 Meteor Awards.

Her star continued to rise on the strength of a number of hit singles from Tales of Silversleeve, which was so called because of Davey’s habit of not using a tissue to wipe her nose as a child. These included the number-one track Reuben, Moving and Sing For Your Supper.

She has also garnered a following as a result of fine live performances at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas; Electric Picnic in 2008 and she also headlined at Oxegen last year.

Her extensive fan base will guarantee a full house when she plays at the Quays Music Hall at 11pm on Friday, which – as is the case for the Coors Light Weekender almost without exception – is a free gig.

The somewhat morbidly named American folk-rock band O’Death have incorporated the Coors Light Live at the Latin Quarter into their Irish touring schedule to give an international flavour to the festivities, and will play at Kelly’s Bar on 11pm this Saturday.

The prolific Brooklyn group will come to Galway fresh from sell-out gigs at Dublin’s Workman’s Club and Crane Lane Theatre in Cork this week, where they will be debuting tracks from their latest album, Outside, which hit the shelves earlier this year.

The Latin Quarter Festival will also put local acts and emerging talent centre stage this weekend and will provide visitors with a great opportunity to enjoy the best that the Galway music scene has to offer.

Among the popular local artists on show will be Tuam native and singer-songwriter Noelie McDonnell, who plays outside Busker Brownes at 6pm on Saturday as part of the Weekender series of street performances that is designed to enhance the city’s festival atmosphere – and should do if the weather remains dry.

The folk singer followed the success of his album, Beyond Hard Places, which spent two months in the iTunes folk album charts, with the release of Come Alive at the end of 2009; and he has enjoyed a hectic schedule of live performances since.
