Six Galway theatre artists who are interested in engaging audiences by using digital and more traditional practices will be presenting new work online from May 18-31.

It’s as part of InterAction, a year-long project being run in conjunction with Galway 2020 and Galway Theatre Festival. This online project originated before the coronavirus had ever made its presence felt, making it make it seem particularly appropriate for the times we are living through.

InterAction producer Jane Hanberry describes the project as “a laboratory for artistic research and development”, in which six artists are researching, creating and sharing work with Irish and international peers.

This month’s event will have live performances, panel discussions, works-in-progress and app launches from Irish and international artists – all online and all free.

The flagship event for InterAction 2020 is a new theatre piece, The Stars in Winter, by writer and performer John Rogers. It celebrates the mystery and joy of astronomy. For this month’s showcase, John will present an overture to the overall piece, called In the Mouth of Fire. He will also facilitate a workshop on devising theatre that incorporates digital technology.

John was one of five Galway-based artists who initially developed the InterAction Lab project back in 2015. It was part of Galway Theatre Festival’s contribution to the European Capital of Culture Bid Book. All five artists were interested in theatre that engaged audiences as participants and or performers.
