Galway football and hurling captains Shane Walsh and Padraic Mannion. Inter-county squads are to be stood down from any future collective training until the GAA gives the green light.

GALWAY hurling and Gaelic football teams are to be barred from collective training as the GAA continues to wrestle with the chaos caused by Covid-19.

All inter-county squads will be in the same boat following the GAA’s decision to rule out any quick return to group training given that the earliest possible starting date for the All-Ireland championships will be early October.

This diktat has been handed down after a consensus was reached between County GAA Chairpersons and the Association’s top brass yesterday (Wednesday).

It is anticipated that county teams will be stood down from collective training for a period up to six weeks before the prospect of any action in the All-Ireland championships.

The GAA is also to seek clarification from the Government in relation to the re-opening of club fields and facilities.

Meanwhile, the Galway GAA Management Committee is due to look at contingency plans for local county championships this evening (Thursday). Already, the respective hurling and football committees have drawn up several options for the restructuring of their titles races.
