Date Published: 16-Jan-2013
The Department of Agriculture is investigating after horses died of gun shot wounds in the Castledaly/Peterswell area at the weekend.
Volunteers from the forgotten horses organisation were shocked when they found the two horses on the commonage of the Slieve Aughty mountains on Saturday afternoon.
Gort Gardaí were alerted to the incident on Monday and contacted the Department of Agriculture which has since removed the animals.
It’s estimated that up 150 wild horses roam freely on the commonage which has an area of 2,400 acres.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Roz Kachcchi of Forgotten Horses Ireland explained the horses were shot in the neck.
