Injury-hit Galway face big semi-final battle with Cats
By Eanna O’Reilly
THE Galway senior camogie team are set to face old rivals Kilkenny on Saturday in Croke Park, in the penultimate stage of the All-Ireland championship (5:30pm). The defending champions are certainly familiar with the Cats, having played against them in their last group game in Athenry in early July.
It took a superb injury time point from Galway’s Áine Keane to level the contest at the death, after Kilkenny looked like they would punish Cathal Murray’s side for a sloppy second half performance. Galway will have to perform at the top of their game on Saturday as knock out semi-finals leave no room for error.
Since winning the National League final against Cork in April, Galway have had been significantly impacted by injuries in their panel. The in-form Rebecca Hennelly, who had tallied 4-19 this season from centre forward, suffered a cruciate ligament injury against Antrim in the fourth round of the group stage.
Sarsfields’ Orlaith McGrath also suffered the dreaded cruciate injury, in another major blow to the Galway forward unit. McGrath, an All-Star winner in the last two years, is an outstanding big game performer, and her injury is another headache for Murray and the management team.
With Caitríona Cormican also absent with an ongoing injury, the Tribeswomen have certainly had their share of bad luck in this regard and could do without any more knocks, with the cover in the panel becoming increasingly thin.
