Injury-hit Corofin men come close to defying odds

HOW quickly it all unravelled, how ruthlessly Galwegian dreams of an All-Ireland club double were banished for another year, as a gallant Corofin side were blitzed by 1-3 in the space of just four minutes to end their hopes at the semi-final stage at Mullingar on Saturday.
The final scoreline does scant justice to the battling efforts of the Galway and Connacht champions, whose spirited second half performance made a mockery of their injury troubles, before a Mark Vaughan inspired Kilmacud punished them ruthlessly right at the end.
It is to the immense credit of the Corofin men that they turned this game into such an absorbing battle for survival, because the sight of county star Kieran Fitzgerald being taken off with an arm injury just minutes into the second half appeared to signal the death knell to their hopes of making it to Croke Park on St. Patrick’s Day.
