Inishbofin find

The discovery of two 18th century French cannons and a timber shipwreck during maintenance work on Inishbofin Harbour has been greeted with excitement by archaeologists and people on the island.
The finds were made as government funded dredging and coastal protection work were being carried out in the harbour, explains Lar Dunne of Eachtra Archaeological Projects, which is in charge of monitoring this work in terms of archaeological finds.
The ship and cannons, were discovered in recent weeks by Julianna O’Donoghue a underwater archaeologist with Eachtra.
These have now been raised from the sea bed and at present, further examinations are being carried out to discover their origins and use.
The 15 metre long shipwreck, built of oak, elm and yew, is proving to be a particularly mystery.
