Inishboffin pier and buildings destroyed in storm
Galway Bay Fm Newsroom
While all major coastal roads in Galway are operational again after the weekend storm a Co Council official says that some minor roads may still be closed due to debris and flooding this Sunday.
Director of Services Liam Gavin says some minor roads in the Renvyle peninsula are still closed and the people of Inishboffin island are still counting the cost of severe damage to infrastructure there in the storm.
Locals on the island say it was the most severe storm, with highest waters, in living memory.
The North Beach was breached and a 30-foot gouge puts homes at serious risk of isolation. The landmark pier and fish curing station of the village of Rusheen in the East End of the island, and its promenade wall, has been reduced to rubble.
Local say that the loss of the pier, a landmark but also a significant part of the bay’s defences, puts the village seriously at risk.
