Ireland’s first 100 percent emissions free taxi is being launched on the Aran Islands this morning.

The six seater vehicle, which is coming from Italy, is being unveiled on Inis Oirr in the next few minutes

The electrically-powered taxi will carry islanders and visitors to and from the ferry to their accommodation on the island, or to functions on the mainland.

It has a range of 150 kilometres on a single charge and travels up to 70 kilometres per hour.

The islanders are also establishing their own wind-powered electricity supply in an effort to make the island totally green.

Robert Moore, Managing Director of Green Machines Electric, which is supplying the vehicle, says there’s no reason why other parts of the country can’t follow suit
