INFESTATION OF ZEBRA MUSSEL PEST IN LOUGH CORRIB

The freshwater pest known as the zebra mussel has infested a large part of Lough Corrib from North of Oughterard down to Collinamuck

This alien species impacts on all aspects of the lake from water supplies, ecology, fisheries and amenity and the Western Regional Fisheries Board is focusing on confining the outbreak

Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Greg Forde says it’s a substantial infestation, and he’s appealing to fishermen not to move boats from that area to other lakes

Dr Forde says a concerted effort is needed from local authorities in Galway and Mayo and all water authorities to stop this pest spreading
