Industry crying out for graduates to fill gap in sector
The number of construction engineering graduates needs to increase dramatically to meet demand – that’s according to major employers in the sector.
Testimony to that was that fact that more than twenty employers from Ireland and the UK attended a careers fair in GMIT – offering numerous positions for graduates in the Built Environment sector.
Final year students from the Department of Building & Civil Engineering in GMIT attended the event and spoke to the employers about future employment positions.
GMIT lecturer Shane Newell pointed to the recent Engineering 2019 report – published by Engineers Ireland last month – which stated that the supply of civil and building engineers had to dramatically increase to meet country’s current and future needs.
Almost all (94%) engineering employers surveyed for that report said they considered a shortage of experienced engineers to be a barrier to growth – and almost half expected this situation to get worse in 2019.
“Civil and building engineers are most in demand with 59% of organisations surveyed looking to hire engineers in this discipline,” said Mr Newell.
And because of this noticeable demand from employers looking for suitably qualified graduates to work in all sectors of the construction industry, the opportunities and rewards are high.
