Industrial action averted at Galway psychiatric unit

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Industrial action at the acute psychiatric unit at University Hospital Galway has been averted as pressures on the system have been lifted.
Last month, psychiatric nurses at UHG voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action over a series of safety concerns.
The Psychiatric Nurses’ Association says the number of patients in the 45-bed unit at UHG has fallen significantly to just over 30, and a new nurse has been hired.
The HSE is also moving to hire an additional 6 nurses in the near future.
General Secretary of the PNA, Des Kavanagh says that if the HSE delivers on its committment to hire more staff, it’s unlikely that nurses will have to press ahead with industrial action.
