University Hospital Galway has had its budget for 2009 increased by over 320 thousand euro as a reward for better efficiencies.

However, around 18 hospitals around the country are to have their budgets cut by over ten million euro next year as a penalty for inefficiencies.

According to today’s Irish Times the money is being deducted by the Department of Health under the ‘casemix’ system, which penalises inefficient hospitals and rewards efficient ones.
