AS first games go, Galway couldn’t have asked for a better start to this year’s Connacht minor football championship then this totally dominant display against Roscommon at Tuam Stadium last Friday.

Goals from Owen Morgan, Éanna Monaghan and Stephen Curley were the icing on the cake for Alan Glynn’s boys who hit the front from the opening minute to run out easy 13 point winners.

The performance wasn’t without fault. There was a shaky 10 minute period midway during the first half that allowed Roscommon get back in contention, other goal chances were allowed slip, and Galway were guilty of being careless at times. But for a first competitive outing in 2022, and a first Covid-free season in which to prepare, this was very encouraging.

This was the first Connacht round-robin series in three years and after three successive defeats to Roscommon, this was as much about the psychological boost of getting over their neighbours as the two points on offer.

And Galway didn’t waste time making an impression as Seán Dunne and Colm Costello had the umpires busy inside the first two minutes.

Centre back Cillian Trayers and midfielder Jack Lonergan were involved in the latter score and would play a key role as Roscommon coughed up some chances. As would Shay McGlinchey who’s fielding was as superb as any senior throughout the country last weekend.

McGlinchey set up Costello for a 0-3 to 0-0 lead on six minutes before Galway provided a sniff of how dangerous they could be. Monaghan and Trayers set up Stephen Curley who rattled the crossbar, while Costello’s rebound was blocked by full back Jack Donnelly.
