Galway Bay fm newsroom – The use of illicit cigarettes has doubled in the city in the last year.

New research carried out MS Intelligence shows that Galway is ranked sixth out of 22 cities and towns surveyed for the worst affected areas.

It examined discarded cigarette packets on the streets and in bins and found that over 30 percent of those located in the city were non-domestic.

This compares to over 15 percent for the same period last year.

The figures are being discussed at a city conference today examining the cost of illicit trade to Ireland’s economy.

It’s hosted by Grant Thornton and is being held in Radisson Blu hotel.

The President of the National Federation of Retail Newsagents Joe Sweeney is one of those taking part in a panel discussion.

The group says tobacco smuggling is continuing to grow and that plans for plain packaging will only provide for more counterfeiting.
