When the British motor manufacturing industry went into decline a couple of decades ago, some of the iconic brands were bought up by others and one of the most iconic names, MG ended up being owned by a Chinese manufacturer.

In 2005, the Nanjing Automobile Group purchased the rights to the MG brand along with other assets of the MG Rover Group, creating a new company called NAC MG UK. This was later renamed MG Motor after a merger between Nanjing Automobile and the Shanghai Automobile Industry Corporation (SAIC).

Back to 1924, MG, called after Morris Garages, was famous for building sporty, exciting and value-for-money cars which are always fun to drive. Models such as the MG Midget, MGB, MGB-GT, Metro and MG-F were just a few of the brand’s more famous vehicles. Now, the MG brand makes an electric return to the Irish market, with a range of family-friendly electric and plug-in hybrid cars.

This week MG Motor Ireland announced the appointment of the first MG Motor Dealers in Ireland, including Shiels Motor Group in Galway City, where it will join Ford and Honda under the one roof at their Headford Road garage. The other locations in Ireland are in Dublin (2), Cork, Limerick, and Tipperary.

“Everyone at Sheils Motor Group Galway is hugely excited to be partnering with MG as their dealer for the West of Ireland,” said Paul Pender, Dealer Principal of Shiels Motor Group.
