Iarnród Eireann is to take action on the controversial length of time motorists and pedestrians need to wait at a level crossing in Athenry.

That’s according to Junior Minister and Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon who has spoken to senior management about the issue.

Locals complained that the gates at the level crossing could stay down for up to 25 minutes several times a day.

Iarnród Eireann says the delays were caused by necessary maintenance works, and also the fact that 35 trains pass through the town every day.

Deputy Ciaran Cannon says these works are now complete, and plans are in place to manually over-ride the automated system of raising and lowering the gates
